EDUCATION IN KENYA
SPONSOR A CHILD
~ 1.9 Million - Children who are of elementary school age, but are not enrolled in school.
~ Education is only compulsary for children through 8th Grade. After graduating from 8th
grade, children must take an exam to see if they qualify to go onto High School.
~ The average student/teacher ratio in public schools if 46 students to 1 teacher with many
classrooms consisting of up to 100+ students per teacher.
~ Education in Kenya is a privilege that most cannot afford. Even free schools are not
completely free so children have to stay home and work instead of going to school.
~ Girls who are not in school are at a higher risk of being married at 12 and 13 years old. If
they are in school, this risk reduces drastically.
The Hope Foundation of Kenya helps to break the cycle of poverty by providing for needy children through Child Sponsorship. The cost to sponsor a child is $30 per month for an elementary age child, and $45 per month for a high school student which covers many basic needs. The child is given two meals a day, medical care, education, a uniform and shoes.
